Deepana

Volunteer

This is Deepana from Tirunelveli which is south part of tamilnadu. I did my bachelor degree in Commerce and Post graduate in Master of Business Administration. In my childhood i had a dream to become priest. Later it converted into to become a transgender when I felt feminine feel in myself. Yes my dream come true through Sakkhi. I started feel like female from my childhood itself. But at that time I didn't have enough awareness about transgender. In our society we have a system men should behave like this woman should behave like this. But I confused myself with the mixture of feelings. So what I did is I hide my feminine feelings. Even I hesitate to walk in front of boys. People will tease about my walk. I don't speak louder in front of a crowd, and then people will tease my voice because of the feminine voice. I hide all my feelings and I didn't express myself as what I am. I was acting like male not living like male. After my studies I moved to Chennai from my home town here I had a chance to meet different transgender people and learned their life styles and collected enough information about transgender lifestyle. I had a chance to work Multinational companies, but there was no gender acceptance. I had no friends there. I don't have persons there to share my feelings. So I decided to quit from there. After leaving my job I had no chance to lead my life so i forced to do begging. While Searching job I came to know about Sakkhi and found my best place here. I started working for transgender. I was not struggling as much compare to other transgender people because of sakkhi.

I am Mercy from Madurai. I did my schooling after that I had no wish to continue my studies because I met many incidents like sexual harassments from the students' side even teacher too. After my Schooling I joined in an NGO which is work for the transgender community. Here I had a chance to chance to slightly change my attire like female and had a chance to interact like me people that are transgender people. Through this connectivity I went to Bangalore without my parents' permission, then later I informed and explained about my situation. Now they accepted as what I'm. When I was in Bangalore i was doing begging. Many times I force into do sex work but I didn't. Then I started raising questions within myself why I have to be here let me leave from this hell. Then I decided to vacate from there. I moved from Bangalore with my friend Kortavai and we had no place to stay we were sleeping road side also. Slowly we got home. Got job in garments as Quality checker. Once the Garments Company closed we lost our job. While we were searching job in that situation we came to know about Sakkhi and joining with Sakkhi and happily working here.

We can find different locality transgender there. Initially i was begging work there like what other transgender does. After a lot of struggling I came to my home town and started working for the transgender community. I worked as Peer educator, Field officer, trainer, Project Lead likewise. We brought great awareness about condom usage. I worked not only for transgender, but also worked for women and under privileged community people. In my working period I had a chance to meet different types of people. Few people are doing sex work not for living luxury life, but for basic needs like food. Poverty plays main role there. Now I have a chance to work with Sakkhi for my community people. I hope it will reach the all transgender.
